Now I’m going to walk you through an installation of the Homebrew channel on either the Wii or or Wii virtual console on the Wii U. This will allow you to run third party applications including emulators and a USB loader to run Wii and Gamecube game backups. Note that hacking a console will always run the risk of bricking the system, but if you follow the instructions given there shouldn’t be any problems.

First off you will need an SD card under 2GB (Not SDHC) and a copy of Super Smash Bros Brawl for the Wii

1. For the first step you will want to download Smash Stack, HackMii Installer v1.2, and cIOS(If you don’t have an unzip program get WinRAR). As a sidenote, the Smash Stack download provided is for the North American region.

2.. For the first step insert the SD card into the game system and start up the game. You then want to go to the Vault, then stage builder and move all of the custom maps over the SD card (inluding the sample maps) and make sure the Wii is not connected to WiFi for now.

2. Next, remove the SD card and insert it into your computer. When you open the SD card there will be a folder labeled “private” rename this to “privateold” and insert the folder labeled “private” from the SmashStack download to the SD card. Next go into the HackMii Installer download and insert the file labeled boot.elf to the SD card.

3. For the next step, you must first turn the game back on then insert the SD card back into the Wii or Wii U (otherwise the system will automatically delete the boot.elf file). Go back into the Stage Builder and the boot.elf will load (the screen should look like the image below). Note the game sometimes hangs and the file will not load, if this happens simply unplug the console, plug it back in and restart step 3.

4. On the next page it will ask you to continue, keep selecting continue until you reach the menu below where you must select “Install the Homebrew Channel”. After the Homebrew channel has successfully installed select continue and then Exit when you get back to the main menu.

5. Now you are going to exit the installer by returning to the Wii menu and remove the SD card. Reinsert the SD card into your computer and move the Apps folder from the cIOS download onto the SD card. While you’re there, now that the Homebrew Channel is already installed, you might now want to delete the folder labeled “private” and rename the folder labeled “privateold” back to “private”.

6. For the next step, reinsert the SD card back into the console, open the Homebrew Channel, and load the cIOS installer. The installer will run and eventually bring you to a settings page (shown below). There will be three settings, the default settings (shown in the first left image) must be changed to the settings in the right image for the initial install (from dx2 v6 -> v10 beta53 and from base 37 -> base 56). After changing the settings, press a to install. Now you must increment the base and slot up by 1 to 57 and 250, respectively, and install again. Now install one last time with the base and slot set to 58 and 251, respectively.

7. Now we can install third party applications to the Wii through the Homebrew channel. But first, I’m going to recommend you install the USB Loader GXapplication (click the link to download). To do so just open the download, go into the “apps” folder, then drag the “usbloader_gx” folder into the similarly labeled “apps” folder on your SD card. This will allow you to play Wii game backups off of an external USB drive or flashdrive even, just make sure all of your games are in “.wbfs” format and place them in a folder labeled “wbfs” on your USB drive.

8. Now for the next step, have fun with your newly modded Wii or vWii. I would recommend going to wiibrew.org and downloading any applications you might want in the same way you installed the USB loader. (I would also recommend the Priiloaderapplication so if you run into any problems, just hold the reset button the console and run priiloader to fix them).

2. i have wii system v3.1U (possibly purchased at launch). **afaik**, this is a 'vanilla' wii not previously softmodded or tampered with. there is no HBC installed.

22. out of desperation, i have (apparently) updated my wii to v4.3U via wifi. midway through the update process, the wii said the update failed due to an internet connectivity issue. despite this, it appears to be updated to 4.3U.
